We are working on our itinerary and need some insight. We originally had planned to go from Galway (2 nights), Westport (1 night) then onto Dublin (1 night) for our flight home. Now, we're contemplating Dublin to Galway (3 nights) and just doing a day trip to Westport before heading onto the rest of our trip. We want more historical towns with culture, music, food, etc. Would it be advised to extend our home base in Galway and day trip it to Westport or should we really make the effort to stay overnight in Westport? Thank you
There are many scenic views and places to stop while driving from Galway to Westport, including Cong, Maam Cross, and the Quiet Man bridge near Oughterard, County Galway, so you could make it a long day trip.
I enjoyed spending a night in Westport and enjoyed some great Trad music in Matt Molloy's Pub there. A band member mentioned that they were playing at another pub the next night, but I only had one night there. For Trad music, I preferred Westport and some other towns to Galway.
There is enough to do in and around Galway if you prefer to spend 3 nights there, but I did enjoy my stay in Westport.
All the best,
Raymond
