Westport Hotel

Hey,
Just arrived at The Mariner, one of Rick’s recommendations in Westport. Yes, he’s right - there is a clinical feeling to the lobby. The room is okay, BUT it’s right on the street, even though I requested a room at the back months ago when I booked it. They are saving all of those rooms for an incoming tour group, the receptionist said. Also, I booked a king room, but the bed is more like a full-size…a queen at the very most. She said “that’s just the way our kings are,” but they should probably not call them kings (and charge for a king) if they’re smaller than that. She was not willing to change the room, even to a twin room at the back, because of the tour bus group. I can see what their priorities are! I’d never stay here again.

I’d just say that maybe an addendum to this listing in the RS Ireland guide might be that rooms overlooking the street can be noisy, and “king” rooms are really beds that are more like a full-size/queen. I feel a bit ripped off by this hotel.

On a more positive note, we visited Cong this morning, and it was great!

The Wyatt Hotel is equally bad regarding noise. The truth is Westport is a noisy place to stay.

The receptionist is right - King size beds in the UK and Ireland are typically 5' wide. I believe the American king size is 6'

I found this when I googled years ago to try to find out why when I was expecting a king it was more like a queen. " A European king size bed typically measures 160 cm wide by 200 cm long (roughly 63 inches by 79 inches). It sits between a US Queen and a US King, making it slightly narrower than a standard US King but longer than a standard US Queen. "

Unless you are staying at at a Marriott or Hyatt, etc. you can't really compare our US expectations/bed sizes to what actual bed sizes are in Europe. They just don't seem to align. So this isn't unique to your hotel in Westport.

I can’t speak about the Westport hotel or the Wyatt. In 2012 we stayed at the “Boulevard Guesthouse” just around the corner from Main Street on a quiet tree lined street overlooking the canal. Not sure if its in the current RS Ireland edition, but we would stay there again.

We stayed at the Clew Bay Hotel in Westport several years ago while on the RS 14 day tour. Because we were unfortunately numbers 8 & 9 to contract Covid, we ended up staying over a week, and really enjoyed our stay, given the circumstances. We had a very quiet room, even though the hotel is on a main street, and the staff is wonderful.
And isn’t Cong a sweet place?
