Weather in Ireland and Scotland

Hi,
We understand that trying to plan a trip around weather in Ireland or Scotland is iffy to say then least. However we would like to get some opinions from those of you who either live or have travelled there which months tend to be the best. Also what months are the most crowded with vacationers?

June and September should offer you a reasonable chance of better weather. School holidays are the latter three weeks of July and August, so the most crowded.

Thank you for your feedback. We are counting on rainy days, so won't be a deterrent.

If you want specific history of temperatures and precipitation over several years for a given month or date, the Weather Underground site allows you to search. You start by choosing a specific location such as Edinburgh or Dublin. See https://www.wunderground.com/

Linda last year we did last week of April and first week of May in Ireland and the weather was great. Some off and on rain and no crowd issues at all. We were up and down the west coast and spent a couple of days in Dublin. I don't think I ever wore shorts but it was very pleasant most days with jeans and a short sleeve shirt. It was quite windy, as expected, and my rain jacket came in handy more for blocking the wind than dealing with rain. I would say the weather was perfect for hiking and outside activities.

We went to Scotland in 2014 in early October. Low crowd time, most all of the B&B's were still open as were the restaurants. We had similar weather, low 60s/50s during the day, cooler at night. Great for hiking. We had several bouts with heavy rain but never had a complete days outdoor activities rained out. We pulled on the coats and boots and headed out but no terrible weather except for one event. A hurricane had hit the Bahamas prior to our leaving the US and it stormed up the US coast and went across to Scotland while we were on the Isle of Skye. It did not bring tremendous rain but did bring really high winds, nothing like we were used to here in Indiana. We had to leave the Isle of Skye a day or two early because the winds were closing the bridge and grounding the ferry. We were disappointed because we loved our time on Skye!!! I would definitely do October again for Scotland but......
one thing you might consider. The days are much shorter in the fall and the spring compared to the summer months, more so than I am used to in the midwest, so your outdoor activities will be somewhat compressed. For us our 60 something bodies welcomed the fact that only one or two hikes were possible while in daylight and we made early visits to the awesome pubs!! Have a blast, it wont be wrong whatever you plan. Take your rain gear and your water proof hiking boots. dj

Recent info. Just got done with 12 days in Scotland. Two days it rained, but didn’t impact our trip as it was on the two days we were driving between destnations. Otherwise, the weather was glorious!!!
I am in Dingle, Ireland now. My third day. The first two days it rained. A lot. Today, mostly sunny skies. Both countries are beautiful no matter the weather!
