Walking Around Blasket Islands Vs. Boat Tour

Trying to decide between getting to Blasket Islands with the marine eco tour or a ferry. If we go with the marine eco tour, we would land on Great Blasket for 3 hours and another 3 would be spent on the marine tour. If we go with the ferry, we would just go to the island and catch a ferry back. Has anyone experienced either or both of these options? Which experience would be more worth it?

The appeal of the marine tour is seeing wildlife (especially puffins) but we don't want to limit our time on the island if there's exceptional experiences past what we could see in 3 hours. Any thoughts would be helpful!

We've done both. I strongly recommend the Eco Tour. The wildlife and views of the other Blasket Islands are incredible.....We saw basking sharks, whales, many dolphins, seals, birds galore and Puffins !!!!! We asked our boat operator how much time we had on Great Blasket and we mentioned we hoped for a bit more time and he asked the boat - you mind an extra hour or so on the island.......everyone agreed.....and there was no rush. But even if it's limited to three hours it's plenty if time to see the settlement and wander a good distance. Honestly it was one of our great life days !!!!!

Also would recommend reading The Islandman by Tomas O'Crohan.....or the writings of Peig Sayers before you go. Enhances the experience tremendously. There is also a great two hour documentary on YouTube that is wonderful chronicling the history and the abandonment of the island.

It's hard not to oversell it. Ireland means the world to me.....and the Blaskets were the highlight of it for us all. Hope you have great weather and,a wonderful trip. Enjoy !!!!!!
