Visiting Ireland

What is the best time of year to visit Ireland, weather wise?

Same answer as to your identical question in the Scotland forum.

Mid-summer weather is generally best in any northern place that gets lots of precipitation throughout the year (they don't call it "the emerald isle" because of 365 days of uninterrupted sunshine - the UK as "this green and pleasant land", etc. etc. - places that call themselves "green" tend to get lots of rain).

No guarantees of sunny skies every day, but summer is your best chance for at least some of that.

Thanks. I am very familiar with Seattle/northwest weather. Figured Ireland and Scotland would be about the same with more rain there than in Seattle area in July and August.

Before our trip to Ireland some years back I read that the lowest rainfall was usually in May. We had two lovely weeks there with only one day of rain and a few other random hours of mist. Otherwise sunshine.

I looked for charts showing rainfall month by month, such as this:

This is for the west coast of Ireland. Lowest rainfall is April through July; August and September are higher.

I did the same for west coast of Scotland and found similar results.

Coincidentally, in our trip to Scotland in May 2014 we had only one day of rain (in Glasgow, which was a museum day anyway). The rest was sunshine.

We love to go in April/May and September and in multiple trips have had great weather. The worst days have drizzle and Sun.....we've only had a couple real stormy days.......almost every day has outdoor possibilities.

We can only go in October and those charts tell me we are going to see a lot of rain......Crap......My Mom hates the rain. We did the UK in October and November and did not have much rain last fall but I think we were lucky

You really never know. We were there from mid-September to early October in 2014, and only had rain on two days. Also, the temperature for the first two weeks was in the upper 60s to mid 70s, and I didn’t need my jacket or sweater until the last four days when it only reached the mid-50s during the day.
