visiting Howth from Dublin

My husband and I will be in Dublin in July and I have 1 day left to plan. I have been reading about taking a bus or train to Howth. Can anyone give me their opinion and helpful advice on this idea? How much of the day should we plan for? Thank you so much

Hi there. We stayed in Howth for the 2 nights that we were in the area. We took the train to Dublin and back one day. It was very easy to do. It is a nice little town with a pretty waterfront and beach. My two teenage sons and I explored some trails in the area near the beach and that was nice. We stayed at the King Sitric hotel and had a lovely lunch in the restaurant, it is pretty well known, especially for its seafood. The train took about 30 minutes and the station is on the waterfront. I think coming in for the morning, strolling around the waterfront , having lunch and then heading back to Dublin in the afternoon is probably plenty of time. Here is a link to the restaurant. https://www.kingsitric.ie/restaurant
Enjoy your trip!

Thank you for your advice, as far as out interests we are in our 50's, like to hike, visit pubs, try new foods, explore new areas, preferably using public transportation, and just wander around. We will have visited the main sights in Dublin and have day trips planned for the Cliffs of Moher and Giants causeway, but have this one last day "free" to plan. This town seems like a good fit but any other suggestions would be appreciated.

I took a guided hike to Howth from Dublin. The group took the train from Dublin Connolly Station. The last stop is Howth so it's not hard to get there. From there we walked past Howth castle (private residence, not something you can visit) through the Rhododendron gardens. Then on, by trail, to the summit parking lot.

That part may be hard without a guide but we weren't the only people on the trail. Except for finding this trail it's easy to do it on your own. It was a beautiful day and there were a lot of people walking, just short of being packed (may be packed in summer).

If you get to the summit parking lot the trail along the cliffs is easy. Essentially starts at the parking lot then bends all the way back around into town and eventually to the pier and train station.
