Visa for travel between Ireland & UK - from USA

Hi all -

This summer my family & I are traveling to Ireland & Scotland! I have tried to research my question, and am not sure of the answer (short of just contacting a government agency).

We are from the USA & are flying into Dublin, Ireland. We will stay in Ireland for a week before flying from Dublin to Edinburg, Scotland via Aer Lingus for a week. After our time in Scotland, we will be returning to Ireland where we fly back home to the US.

Can anyone advise if a re-entry visa or any visa of this nature would be required? I have tried to research & have the understanding that neither country requires visas from US citizens, but does not clarify when traveling between these countries before flying home.

Any help is appreciated!!

Your U.S. passport is all you need to fly from home to Dublin, then Dublin to Edinburgh, then from Scotland back to Ireland, and then back to the USA. Have a great trip!

Just so you aren't caught by surprise, you will not need to go through passport control between Ireland and Scotland. However, on your return to Ireland you will go through Irish passport control. And if you are flying direct from Ireland to the US, you will pre-clear US immigration (passport control) in Ireland. That means you go through Irish security, then US TSA security, then US immigration and passport control. US immigration is after the duty free shops. So don't linger too long. The US immigration line can be long.

What Trotter wrote is spot on.

No visa required. Just your passport. You can go back and forth as much as you like.

US-Ireland...passport control in Ireland. This also gives you the right to enter the UK.

Ireland-Scotland...nothing. Like a domestic flight in the US.

Scotland-Ireland.....Irish Passport Control

Ireland-USA.....US Immigration and Customs prior to your flight. When you arrive in the US you just walk off the plane and go. Like a domestic flight.
