We will be visiting Belfast and Derry in the fall and would love to stay in an apartment or house in a village or townland where we could walk to the pub, shops and train into Belfast. (Same question for Derry)
Can anyone recommend a picturesque town in either of these two areas? Thanks in advance!

For Derry I would suggest Castlerock, 30 minutes and the second stop from Derry.
For Belfast I would suggest Carrickfergus (more of a town) or Whitehead (both on the Larne line - 30 and 40 minutes respectively from Belfast.

For staying near Belfast, I would recommend Helen's Bay which is a short train ride into town. It's right next to Crawfordsburn which has a beautiful beach and I like the Old Inn at Crawfordsburn. Holywood is also a lovely place and is a few stops closer to town.
