VAT forms once home?

Hi,

We went to Ireland and England in July and I bought a purse at Bunratty Castle. The employees there gave me a receipt and an envelope to get the VAT returned. I didn't realize that was something that was supposed to happen at the airport (this was my first international trip). Is it too late now? I also have some stray receipts from England, but I think they need to add up to a specific amount in one purchase? Just wondering if I should go ahead and recycle the receipt and envelope at this point.

Thanks

File to the circular bin. The VAT return needs to be done as you leave the UK.

Thank you! I appreciate you taking the time to comment. Now I know for next time. (Good thing it wasn't that much.)

Actually, I was under the impression that the UK ended the VAT reclamation scheme back in 2020?

From visitlondon.com: The UK government ended VAT RES on 31 December 2020 when the Brexit transition period ended.

Note that Northern Ireland even as part of the UK does have a VAT reclaim scheme although it is moot if you visit Great Britain next before going home. (And even if you go via another EU country for that matter, depending on how expensive the item is.)

Ireland is not part of the UK so UK VAT rules do not apply to the purchase from Bunratty Castle. Ireland does still have a VAT refund program but it really depends on the amount of the refund as to whether it is worth the effort trying to get the refund approved after leaving the country. So as said above, the purchases in the UK are nonstarters for refunds but the purchase made in Ireland is a different story. Just do this search in Google "how to obtain a VAT refund from Ireland after leaving" and see if the steps described look like too much effort for what you will get back.
