Using GPS in Ireland & UK (Scotland)

Has anyone brought their own GPS with them on their trip and purchased Irish/UK maps? How did that work out? What kind of GPS do you have? How hard was it to obtain the Irish/UK maps?

We used a Garmin (purchased on Amazon) that already had the European maps installed. Came in quite handy while trying to find addresses in and near the cities, although we tended to turn it off for meandering drives thru the countryside, preferring to reference a Collins Road Atlas that we purchased on arrival in Dublin.
Might be worth investigating international data plans for your smart phone - could be cheaper in the long run to just use the Maps feature on that and not have to carry another electronic gadget across the pond.

I have a Garmin GPS with a add on for the roads of Europe. I've used in Ireland, England, Wales and Scotland without issue. It's about 6 years old now and I'm planning on buying a new map chip before a planned trip to Ireland in 2016 because of all of the new roads built. My current map chip doesn't have the new Dublin airport in it which caused some confusion when I was returning my rental car on our last trip.

You can easily pay for a new GPS and Europe map chip by avoiding paying for the GPS in a rental car in a one week trip.

Thanks everyone! It turned out that friends got us a Garmin Nuvi 56 as a Christmas present. I bought the UK/Ireland add-on maps for $72 Canadian, and will bring this with us when we travel this spring. RON

If it has European maps already installed then you should be good to go. If not you'll need to download the European maps onto your Garmin.
