Using Dublin as a transit point

We are planning a trip mostly to Portugal, Spain, Bretagne, but are thinking of Dublin as a transit point to fly to and fly back from. Have others done this? Ryan Air seems to have a lot of flights. Plus I do have a 1/4 Irish ancestry. We'd be flying to in Oct, flying back in Nov, probably from Dulles. We might begin the trip by staying in Dublin for 2-3 nights.

I haven’t but I have friends who like doing this as they like flying back from Dublin with the immigration there before departure. They travel a couple of times a year and don’t do it every time but frequently.

I don't see the value of Dublin as a transit point unless you intend to spend some time there. It's a wonderful city, and you might be especially interested in EPIC, where you might learn more about your ancestors. After checking into your homebound flight, you'll go through US immigration before boarding, so that your IAD landing will be like a domestic flight. That's a minor advantage, though it means getting to DUB earlier than you might otherwise.

Don’t rule anything out. Find the best transatlantic flight for you (whether cheapest, shortest, most comfortable, uses miles, whatever), and work from there. For example, I was able to get a SEA-FRA business class ticket using miles. Stayed three nights in Germany before flying Lufthansa to Belfast.

In the past we've used Dublin as a hub because of work and friends in Dublin. I'm not sure we would do so now unless our friends will be available for a visit. It's not really cost effective unless there's a reason to be there.
