USD to Euros

Is there a bank branch at Dublin Airport or should I get some Euros before I leave the States? What is the rate for a taxi from the Airport to downtown Dublin?

I always go to my bank and get $200-$300 in Euros before I leave on a trip so that I have enough cash to make it from the airport to my hotel and meals for at least the first 24-48 hrs. From that point on I use ATM’s as needed, but I always try to use ATM’s that are physically connected to a bank.

I got Euros from a bank ATM at the Dublin airport. Sorry, don't remember which bank. I prefer to wait and get my Euros when I get to the country so I get the best exchange rate. It was a few years ago when I took a taxi from the airport to a hotel off St. Stephen's Green. I think it was about 30 EUR.

Taxi from Dublin airport to Dublin city center is roughly $30-$35 (depending on traffic and exchange rate). I think every taxi i’ve Taken in Dublin took credit cards.

I'm taking a bus downtown. The express buses are around 5-7 euros per ride (there are at least two companies I'll be using). There are also local buses that cost around 2 euros but make more stops so take longer.

I never pay the additional costs to exchange for Euros in the US. There are always bank ATMs at the airport. Biggest thing is to use something that's a bank rather than an exchange booth disguised as an ATM. If it has bank somewhere in the name, it's good. The exchange booth charges extra fees. As far as I can tell it's always both more expensive and less convenient to buy euros in the U.S.

Some bank accounts may give you a free exchange in return for keeping a large balance but there's an opportunity cost for that and you still have to make an extra trip to your bank.

I always make my first stop in any given country a bank ATM at the airport as that has always been the best rate of exchange. Landing in Dublin on June 9th and will be doing the same. Since we are traveling with another couple and splitting costs it seems to makes sense to us to just take a taxi, by the time you take a bus or train fare times 4 it is nearly equal.

Thanks, Wayne. There will be five of us with Lord knows how many suitcases, so I think two taxis will be the easiest.
