Traveling with Asthma

My wife has asthma and we would like to travel to Ireland.

Along with mold, mildew, and dust, fragrances can set off the asthma. We are looking for a hotel that would be free of these items. Hard surface floors and no scented products in the room.

Ang suggestion? Are there places we shouldn’t visit?

We are also looking for similar places in the U.K. and Europe. Are there any other blogs about traveling with asthma? The ones that I am finding deal with food allergies.

My husband has asthma as well, though I know there are different levels of severity. He did not have any problems in Ireland, but has an inhaler.
You didn't give your itinerary, so not sure where you were looking for hotels.
The hotels were mostly older and while we didn't smell any mold or see any mildew, just do your do diligence. Email the hotel and ask about hard wood floors and explain the situation. Find a newer hotel. Perhaps bring your own pillow.
Good luck!

Thank you.

We are thinking of staying in Dublin and doing day trips from there. My great great grandfather was from around Cavan. My brother told me the family farm (the ones who stayed) is near the Northern Ireland boulder. My wife’s great great grandmother was baptized at St Mary’s in Dublin.

Get a prescription for QVAR. It is a prophylactic. I have asthma and as long as I take it as directed I do not have attacks.

I also suffer from Asthma, about 15 years ago my doctor put me on Adviar then later Symbicort. As long as I take the medication they have all but eliminated any attacks and symptoms. I only have to take the rescue inhaler occasionally when I exercise. See if there is anything your doctor can do for you.

I have asthma and i'm very allergic to mold (including all mold derivative drugs like penicylin). I can tell you, mold is an issue in Ireland -- you can SEE it on the walls of some of the older buildings (like in my village; some of my friends houses....). I would just be sure to take a look at the age of a building; maybe call the hotels and talk to them. Some (like for example The Dromhall Hotel in Killarney) LOOK old, but are actually new and super clean - I stay there, often. There is a B&B 50 yards away that I cna't walk in the door without wheezing! So unfortunately, it's catch as catch can....

Good luck!
