Traveling to Ennis from Dublin for RS 8 Day Tour

I am thinking about signing up for the RS 8 Day tour. It would be more efficient (travel time) to take a direct flight to Dublin for me. I thought I would spend the arrival night in Dublin and the next day take the M Express (bus service I believe) to Ennis. The goal would be to either arrive in Ennis the day before the tour or the day the tour begins. Here are my questions:

Would it be better to have an extra day in Ennis? Or just get there when the tour begins?

Has anyone taken the M express service?

Thank you for your advice.

We did a tour last year that began in Shannon. We flew into Dublin and then took the train to Shannon, so you might check into the train option as well. Ennis is not very far from Shannon, but Shannon might be as close as you will be able to get on the train. There may be a bus that would take you to Ennis from Shannon, but I’m not sure.

When we were in Ennis our friend took a train from Dublin to Limerick (I think) to join us.

You can take a bus from Dublin or take the train to Shannon and a bus or cab to Ennis.

Our flight to Dublin was cancelled so we rerouted and flew directly to Shannon. Stayed the night in Cork because there was no room at the hotel in Ennis. At Shannon airport the ‘cab’ was the very nice man named Pat Deneen who picked us up and drove us to the hotel.. Not a yellow cab. We told him that we needed to get to Ennis the next day and he picked us up at the hotel and took us to Ennis for 80 euro. Great guy took us the scenic route told us all kinds of stories. But still 80 euros.

You could easily take the bus, other people in our tour group did. Ennis is lovely you could definitely spend a day there walking around getting over jet lag and having a pint.

We just got back from this tour about a month ago. We flew into Dublin and overnighted there. We took the train to Galway for a couple days then a one hour train from there to Ennis. I believe the train service is better than bus when available in Ireland. The train station is walking distance from the RS hotel. Ennis is an interesting smallish town and the tour hotel, the Old Ground Hotel is a good one. I’d arrive in the mid day or come the day before. I think we gathered at 2 pm to meet our tour guide and then had a walking tour of Ennis before dinner.

I took the Dublin Coach M7 the opposite direction from Ennis to Dublin last July. The bus was perfectly fine, for a bus; the wifi worked well, there was a bathroom on board. it was on time and not at all crowded. It was much cheaper than the train (unless you catch the cheapest online train fare). The bus is direct with no changes and only about 1/2 hour longer than the fastest train, I think, and I think there are 2 buses per hour . I believe most if not all of the trains require a change in Limerick.

Thank you to all the posts in response to my question. This travel forum is such a fantastic resource. I appreciate the link to Irish Rail and the other testimonies about train vs. bus service. Now I have to make some decisions.

Again, THANK YOU!
