When traveling by car how do we know where to pay the tolls. We are renting from Hertz and picking up the car at the Dublin airport. The 1st stop will be in Kilkenny. I read the information on the Rick Steves web site regarding money and the use of credit cards. We are staying in B&B 's most of our nights in Ireland and many of the B&B's accept a credit card. When is it advantageous to use a master card or visa and save our euros?
Most of the tolls are barriers and require cash only. The one on the M50 is an electronic one which can be paid online with a credit card, or in certain shops. Most fuel stations, especially in the Dublin area, will take payment.
I try to pay cash at B&Bs to help them save on fees for processing credit cards.
I try to do the same as Stephanie. ATMS are readily available and I take out as much cash as I can; needing to conserve cash has only rarely been an issue in my travels. Exchange calculator's like www.oanda.com peg the typical credit card exchange rate as bank rate +3%, and typical debit/ATM card rate as bank rate +2%, which would point to a slightly better value at the ATM, but your banks' specifics will vary.
Many petrol stations will allow you to pay the M50 toll. You can pre pay also. You buy and its valid to use days later.
