Travel on a whim possible?

This is our first time to Ireland. Is it possible to travel Ireland without having firm hotel/airbnb reservations? We are going to Ireland and Scotland (two weeks) and are inclined to drive where we're moved to go. Stop when we like something. Move on if we don't. Is this practical in April? I hate to commit to a schedule.

In April it may not be completely foolish -- which it likely would be in mid-May through September. You just need to realize that the lodgings that are most attractive and good value for the money are likely to be booked ahead. A compromise would be to plan 18-24 hours ahead using a site like Booking.com that lets you see photos as well as rates and availability. If you try to do it literally on a "whim" (i.e., at the last minute each night), you could end up sleeping in some places that are fairly icky, or overpriced, or way out of your way because nothing at all was available where you wanted to be.

You shouldn’t have much of a problem finding lodging that time of year. The only place we had a slight issue was in Galway when we arrived very late afternoon. On that trip the only places we had confirmed reservations was the first and last nights.
