Travel from Doolin to County Cork

We are spending four days in the Doolin area and then heading to the area slightly west of County Cork (near Farran Woods so I can visit the town my grandparents came from). It looks like a 3-hour drive, which is a bit long for the littles. Anyone have a suggestion for routes to take, or places to stop along the way (either as short stops to stretch our legs/eat or as stay-overs)?

Thanks!

Well, Ireland is chock-full of interesting places to stop and stretch your legs. :)

Adare might be a nice stop - there’s a nice little visitor center, with parking, restrooms, a park, and church. Another interesting place off the main roads is Grange Stone Circle Lough Gur - plenty of room to run but no bathrooms unless you go an extra 10-15 min drive to the Visitors Center. And I was taken by the Buttevant Abbey in Buttevant on the N20 - didn’t know about it and wasn’t expecting it. And I haven’t been but Mallow Castle (in Mallow) looks interesting - and there’s apparently a playground nearby. Even without a plan, I don’t think you will have trouble finding somewhere interesting along the way. :)

If you drive through Ennis it's worth a stop and wander. Don't know how old the littles are but the Rock of Cashel is definitely worth the extra 45 minutes of drive time regardless of age.
