I have tried to reach the shuttle service from Dublin to Bru Na Boinne that you write about in your books but I continually get a "that number is no longer in use" message. Have they stopped the shuttle? Has anyone used the shuttle recently and do you have a current phone number for them? Or, is it likely that we could use Uber?

Guidebook update notes for this year state "The Newgrange shuttle bus between central Dublin and the burial tomb at Newgrange now limits its trips to parties of 10 or more people." At www.overthetoptours.com, see the small link for "Booking and enquiries" - it does have a different phone number, although I'm not getting through on the number, myself. I've forwarded the issue to the book's co-author, as he'll be researching next month.
Thanks for the reply. I checked the website you provided and used the new number posted on the site and it still says the number is wrong. Looks like it's Uber or a very expensive cab ride. We will also look into renting a car for a day. Such a shame--
Pat is recommending the Mary Gibbons coach tour as the best option. If doing the car rental, he suggests the airport for pick-up and drop-off.
FYI, this private tour company that I saw charges about €400 for a small group, I assume for 8 hours.
Wait, isn't there bus service from Dublin to Newgrange?
There may be but I'm not sure yet from what pick-up point and if it goes directly to the Visitor Center at Bru n B. I will look into it.
There may be but I'm not sure yet from what pick-up point and if it goes directly to the Visitor Center at Bru n B. Looking quickly, I don't see any buses that stop there and a cab is over $100 each way. So it looks like it's Uber or rental car.
Pat also said: Public bus from Dublin to the nearest town is Donore. The nearest a train can reach is Drogheda (on the coast) and then you would need a bus connection from there. These would be last resort options that would suck time and energy away from the quality of the visit.
I agree with you----too much travel in relation to time at site.
One final question: Have you any experience with using Uber in Dublin and other cities in Ireland? Is it significantly less expensive than cabs as in the U.S.?
We haven't researched Uber.
We've booked a tour with newgrangetours.com. It's €40 per adult.
