Hello all, We are traveling to Ireland for the first time this summer. We are exploring transportation options from Dublin to Westport and beyond. We would like to combine train and car travel. Has anyone had experience in renting a car either in Westport or a town along the train route from Dublin? I was looking at Longford as an option.

Why don't you fly into Shannon?

In a quick search, the closest car rentals to Westport that I see are at Knock airport, but it's not on the rail line. If not flying to Shannon, then the next options look like either taking the train to Galway or driving all the way from Dublin.

We are taking the direct train to Westport from Dublin. Our apartment is not that far from train station. We are using public transportation while there, taxis in Westport do great tours. We are a group of five, biking to Achill and the bike company brings us back. We thought we would let them do a tour for us one day to Cong etc. We are also climbing Crough Patrick so might need a taxi there.
