Has anyone here traveled by train from Dublin to Belfast with golf clubs? There are four of us, each with carry-on sized rolling luggage plus a set of clubs. Did you run into any issues finding space on the train to store the golf bags?
I've ridden on trains in Switzerland with a 5 ft long snowboard bag and that was not a problem. There was a rack near the door I stored it on.
I'm not sure how information about trains in Switzerland is helpful here....
Have a look at the irish rail website which gives information about luggage on their trains. I asume the golf clubs will fit on the overhead racks or between the seats? The rolling luggage would need to be left in the racks at the end of the carriage.
This website gives pictures of a Dublin to Mullingfar train and will give you an idea of luggage storage.
The only problem may be if the train is very busy with a lot of other pasengers taking a lot of luggage.
On the Dublin to Belfast route there are three train types currently in service depending on which departure, due to the new hourly service- the Enterprise train sets, Irish Rail inter city sets (like the one to Mullingar) and a Northern Ireland railways intercity set- like the Belfast to Londonderry trains .
You can tell which is which in the timetables- the Enterprise convey a restaurant car and 1st class, the 2nd class only are NI railways, the others are IR inter city.
The Enterprise are the best for this kind of request, the NI ones the worst.
The link provided above looks like every train I have been on in Ireland. I don't see how golf bags would fit in the racks. I expect you'd need to put them in the overhead racks. This shouldn't be a problem if you're bringing lightweight, travel-friendly golf bags that you can lift over your heads to get into the rack. I've never noticed the "between the seats" storage that someone else mentioned, so I wouldn't count on that.
I'd have to think that the club you plan to play at could offer some assistance with your question. You would not be the first people in this situation. You might also consider taking a bus/coach which has more adaptable storage area than a train.
I agree with cl, there are frequent buses from Dublin to Belfast which would make transporting golf clubs a lot easier than a train.
Have you considered the trains' baggage cars? We travel with loaded bicycles and have never had any rack/space availability or room issues with Irish Rail or with any European train.
This is a serious question David - do Irish trains have 'baggage cars'? I can't remember when I last saw one on a train. The Irish Rail website states "Luggage must be kept with you at all time"
Wasleys, yes the Enterprise sets do have a baggage car, in the DVT (the Driving Van Trailer) car.
That is one of the reasons why they are the best of the three train types working the route.
They are a totally different type of train to anything else on Irish Rail, except the Dublin to Cork trains.
Wesleys,
Yes indeed as confirmed above. Used them many times all over Ireland. Roll 'em (actually lift) on, roll 'em off.
Thank you everyone for taking time to respond. I'll review the options suggested. Cheers!
