We are traveling to Ireland for the first time on 9-1-18. Our first 3 days will be with a guide who is picking us up at the airport in Cork and showing us around south- SW coastal area and on 3rd day will drop us off in Limerick where we will need to catch a train to Dublin. Our lodging in Dublin is in the Temple Bar to Grand Canal area. Any great advice on correct train to take out of Limerick and connections to get to our ultimate location in Dublin? Do we need to pre-purchase train tickets or is it safe to buy tickets when we get to the station? There are 5 of us, all adults. Thanks for any advice!
Maggie
The train from Limerick is direct and goes into Dublin Heuston station on the west side of town. From there you could either catch a taxi (or two) to your hotel, or connect after a short delay and proceed on to Dublin Connolly station which would be within walking distance of Temple Bar. Here's the Irish rail website for info: http://www.irishrail.ie/.
No need to book in advance unless there's an event going on in Dublin - the trains never sell out otherwise.
If you book train tickets a week or two in advance you can save money compared to buying on the day. Not sure on the best method of transport to your accommodation as "Temple Bar to Grand Canal" (do you mean Grand Canal Dock?) covers a huge area. Might be easiest to hop in a taxi and be dropped at the door.
Thanks for the info. It really helps. Yes, we are staying on Graffton which is supposed to be within walking distance of the Grand Canal Dock area and Temple Bar. Sounds like it will be easiest to just grab a taxi to our lodging once we are in Dublin.
