We'll be in Dublin June 1-2. We're staying in the Ballsbridge area of Dublin. I'm planning a "Trad Music NIght." It looks like O'Donoghues near Merrion Square might be the place. Sessions are said to start at 9:00 PM. This is about a mile from the B&B, (walkable). Do you have any other recommendations? Better music, better food, closer, less touristy, earlier?
O'Donoghues was great. Two rooms with different groups playing. So much fun!
We enjoyed the laid back nature of the Music Pub Crawl that met at Gogarty's pub down in the Temple Bar area. Was early in the evening, you got to stretch your legs every half an hour or so and the musicians were great. They did traditional music and talked about trad music and the lack of it in the Temple Bar area and they provided direction to trad music pubs for later that evening. I enjoyed all forms of music we encountered in Dublin and it is very much a mixed bag!
Oliver St John Gogarty's Pub is THE place for trad music. The food there is really great too. We shared a Guinness Casserole. It was huge, plenty for two and the best meal of our 3 week trip to Ireland, Liverpool & Edinburgh. There are 3 floors to the pub, with the 2nd floor having the trad music. We really loved it & ended up there twice while in Dublin.
