We will be staying in Galway and planing a day in Connemara. Any advise regarding taking a self drive tour compared to the day tours from Galway on a bus would be appreciated.
We drove it ourselves three summers ago. I remember it being a VERY long day. We made several stops, and the weather was rainy. I'm glad we made the drive but wish we had the option of choosing a day with better weather. Can't compare it to a bus tour.
It's a lovely place to drive and not particularly crowded. Good stops include Roundstone and Clifden. Be sure you fill your gas tank before you start out - many of the gas stations in Connemara were abandoned. We had to drive thirty miles out of our way to get gas! Our most recent trip there was 2012.
The Sky Road out of Clifden is beyond beautiful. It's an easy drive past Connemara National Park and Kylemore Abbey.
Bill,
I am in Galway right now and staying at the Petra House B&B which is wonderful and right in city center by the bus station where the Galway Tours go out of. I used them to go to Connemara and to tour the Kylemore Abbey and Cong. Watch the Quiet Man if you have not. I enjoyed being on the bus as it started to rain but our tour guide made it enjoyable as they use a great driver and then the guides explain the countryside. If you had more time, a car would get you to more places.
The tours are really a great value at 25euro or less. Amazing and they pick you up at your hotel or B&B if arranged.
But have you considered the Aran Islands or the Cliffs of Moher. Add a day if at all possible as I had the best guide ever for the Aran Islands.
