Tour of Irish National Stud Farm

Can you tour the farm by yourself, not doing the tour, and see the same things as doing the tour? I'm struggling with the timing of the 3 Tours they offer and it just doesn't work with what I'm thinking of doing, coming or going to Dublin. But I sure hate to miss seeing some horses or other good things because we didn't do the tour. Any advice?

We toured the stud farm without a guide and really enjoyed it. It is a gorgeous place and the Japanese Garden there is enchanting. A film is shown on the history of the place and birthing of the foals. I think you can see the farm in two hours or so. It is in the Kildare area and well signed as to the location. Some of the racehorses, such as Invincible, were out grazing in pastures not accessible to viewing so that was a bit disappointing. The stalls are impressive to say the least! Argentine Fallabellas were grazing near the fence so we had a close view of them as well as many colts. If you love horses this is a must see visit.

But was there anything that you couldn't see because you didn't take the Tour...behind the scenes places etc?

I don't think we missed anything. There is the veterinarian office right there, of course, but I doubt it would be up for visitors. Look at their website--it is good--and it may give you more insight. Just Google and you will have a great preview.

I have been there twice on 2 different bus tours........allow a few minutes for the monastic cells with the Waterford crystal ferns and orchids.....sounds goofy, but is exquisite. we didn't see it on the first trip.....I hunted it down on the second. the Japanese gardens are lovely, too.

nice little cafeteria next to the gift shop, too. FYI....we left there with angry bee the size of a robin in our tour bus.

I'd not read about ferns. Thanks for the info. I'm quite looking forward to the visit.
