We are trying to plan trip to Ireland for @ 8 days and we are open to any suggestions on where to go and what to see. We really want to enjoy the people of Ireland and want time to simply "hand out" but also see those "must sees" while we are there for our first trip. We are open to driving but also public transportation. Any help would be apprecited.
You could have a look at the host's 8 day tour to see what he considers the highlights, but keep in mind that you would not be able to cover all that traveling independently.

8 days is a very short visit for any country. Are you including the day you get there and the day you leave? If so, then you don’t really have eight days on the ground to see the sights. With such a short time frame I would pick two cities and split your time between them. Dublin and Galway would work well because they are fairly close by train, and there is a lot to see and do in and around each place. You wouldn’t need to bother renting a car because there are plenty of guided tours that would get you to the places you want to see.
