Thinking of traveling by bus instead of car - thoughts or experience?

It sounds like car travel in Ireland can be challenging. Trains do not seem like a good option unless you stay in larger cities.
Has anyone traveled by bus in Ireland? Are buses frequent? Slow? on time? do they travel to most smaller villages?

Would appreciate any experience people would like to share.

thanks
Pat

It really depends on where you are and where you want to go. Often there are express buses, but they don't always go to the smaller villages. I've seen them on time and I've seen them late. What you should do first before you decided to take the buses is look up and see if there are any Irish holidays happening during your trip and then look up the bus schedules based on that and how many Sundays your in Ireland for. Also keep in mind that it is going to take about double the time a normal car ride would take to get to most places.

The local buses are where you meet all the neat, local people. The fast buses will have a larger percentage of people exactly like yourself.
