The Quiet Man Tour

Hello all,

I am traveling to Ireland in October with my older sister. I have promised to take her to The Quiet Man filming sites, but have learned that the Museum in Cong, and associated tours, close the end of September. I have written to the museum directly to see if anyone is available for a private tour, but have not heard back from them. I can't seem to find anyone in the area that might be available the third week of October. I know smaller venues shut down for the fall/winter, but I am hopeful someone in this knowledgeable group might be able to point me to someone.

I would hate to disappoint my sister, and am not sure she will make this trip again. I'm already looking at the Hawk Walk in the area, but still want something specific to The Quiet Man if I can find it.

Thanks for reading so far.

Hi Linda,
On a daytrip tour through Conemara from Galway, I remember that we passed by and/or stopped at a couple Quiet Man locations. I had no interest myself but became aware that it is a popular interest. Even if the replicate cottage is not open, I there are other smaller outdoor spots that you could visit. This website and similar ones you might find may help you find them https://www.cosmosmariners.com/blog/quiet-man-1952-filming-locations

There's lots of information on the web. Do a google search for 'Quiet Man film location sites' and it brings up lots of helpful websites. Most locations are in or around Cong, but a few are a bit further afield.

Most cover the same locations, but others only appear on a few sites. Use these to plan your own trip,. OK you won't have the commentary but with a bit of research can probably design a good tour for yourselves.

This is probably the one to begin with...

Then have a look at the following (no particular order...)

There may well be others...

The Quiet Man Cottage isn't open in October, but Dan O’Hara’s Homestead is. OK it is a bit earlier than the film which was set in the 1920s, but will give an idea of what the cottage may have been like. (Plus a lot of even earlier Irish homesteads too!)

As has been mentioned, the village is pretty compact and a google search will turn up a number of film sites requiring only a a short walk, so you could put together a pretty efficient self-guided itinerary on your own if you don't mind doing the research..
If a guided walk is preferred you could inquire at the Community Tourist Office located just up the street from the cottage/museum. I imagine they deal with these sorts of inquiries all the time and would likely be able to hook you up with with a local guide on short notice.
Might be worth posing the question to the Hawk Walk folks over at Ashford Castle too - they might be able to arrange something for you or at least refer you to someone locally who can. We've generally found that the locals will go out of their way to be helpful to visitors ... particularly visiting Yanks whom they typically consider to be repatriated members of their extended family..

Thanks for the quick replies. Robert, I'd seen some of the resources you referenced but one of them is particularly good. I have written to several sources looking for a guide, but if one doesn't turn up, I'm confident we can cobble together a tour and see some of these sites.

Hi
I was just there last week. In fact I took the tour before my Falcon Walk. A nice gentleman and myself. I was the only one signed up that day. He said he only lived a few miles away. I would try to contact the museum again. They were pretty nice to me.
I also took the Hawk Walk and that was really cool.

It is such a small town full of long time families. I am sure if you time your arrival for lunch at one of the local establishments, you could ask about where to go and they would tell you. Who knows they may just call up their brother, cousin, or nephew to help you out. Everyone was so welcoming the last time I was there.

I know this is irrelevant to your question, but I agree with the other poster about the Hawk Walk at Ashford Castle. It was one of my favorite things in Ireland. The ruined church in Cong is lovely.

Thanks y'all. I have made arrangements for a tour with The Quiet Man folks, even though the museum will be closed for the season. We plan to visit the Quiet Man bridge on the way to Cong, and the train station on our way to County Longford. I think we have put together a good day's plan for Cong, intending to visit the woods and walk around the town. Closing this thread now. Éire go brách!
