Texan in Ireland

9 Nights in Western Ireland – Itinerary Feedback

We’re planning a 9-night self-drive trip to western Ireland early Sept. to celebrate our 30-year anniversary. We’re flying in and out of Shannon from Texas. We prefer scenery, smaller towns, local pubs/trad music, getting to know the people, and a fairly relaxed pace rather than trying to see everything. We’ll have a rental car for the trip.

Our basic itinerary is:

Day 1 – Shannon → Doolin
Arrive Shannon in the morning and pick up rental car. Depending on energy/jet lag, possibly stop at Dromoland Castle before continuing to Doolin.
Sleep: Doolin Airbnb

Day 2 – Cliffs of Moher/Doolin
Cliffs of Moher in the morning. Doonagore Castle viewpoint, Doolin village (shopping and snack), and otherwise keep the afternoon fairly relaxed.
Sleep: Doolin Airbnb

Day 3 – The Burren
Explore the Burren: Burren Perfumery, Poulnabrone Dolmen and Caherconnell Stone Fort/sheepdog demonstration.
Sleep: Doolin Airbnb

Day 4 – Inis Oírr + Cliffs Cruise
This is our anniversary day (a Monday). Ferry from Doolin to Inis Oírr. Explore the island for several hours (1 hour horse & carriage tour), then take the late-afternoon ferry/cruise beneath the Cliffs of Moher back to Doolin.
Sleep: Doolin Airbnb

Day 5 – Doolin → Clifden/Connemara
Drive toward Clifden with a possible stop at Corcomroe Abbey and/or Hazel Mountain Chocolate. Spend the afternoon exploring Clifden.
Sleep: Clifden B&B

Day 6 – Connemara
Kylemore Abbey (only exterior and gardens), then a scenic driving day depending on weather: Sky Road, Roundstone and Dog’s Bay.
Sleep: Clifden B&B

Day 7 – Clifden → Galway
Possible stops at Glengowla Mines and/or Connemara Celtic Crystal before continuing to Galway. Explore Galway in the afternoon/evening and attend a show that night (“Mary’s Hopes and Dreams).
Sleep: Galway Hotel

Day 8 – Galway
Explore Galway/Latin Quarter, shop for matching Claddagh ring, Spanish Arch, and Micil Distillery tour in the late afternoon. Trad music in the evening.
Sleep: Galway Hotel

Day 9 – Galway → Ennis/Shannon area
Drive to Ennis, explore Ennis Friary and possibly visit Quin Friary. Continue to our final hotel convenient to Shannon Airport.
Sleep: Shannon/Ennis area

Day 10 – Fly home from Shannon

There is also a family-history component to the trip. My mother-in-law's family is Irish (O'Brien), so we've included a few stops connected to O'Brien history and heritage. Those are meaningful to us even if they wouldn't necessarily be considered "must-see" tourist stops.

I'd especially appreciate thoughts on:

  • Does this feel comfortably paced, or are any days too ambitious?
  • For our one full Connemara day, would you prioritize Sky Road/Roundstone/Dog’s Bay, or change that route?
  • Are any of the optional stops not worth the time?
  • Anything along this route that we're overlooking and should substitute for something above?

We deliberately aren't trying to cover Dublin, Dingle, Killarney, etc. on this trip. We'd rather spend more time in County Clare, Connemara and Galway than rush around the country.

It’s our first time visiting Ireland and hope to visit again because there’s just so much to see. Thanks for any suggestions!

It sounds a wonderful itinerary to me - nice and relaxed with plenty of time to really get the feel for the parts of Ireland you are visiting. There's also time to stop oiff at those unexpected places you come across. Corcomroe Abbey is delightful and isn't yet on the typical tourist itinerary.

For our one full Connemara day, would you prioritize Sky Road/Roundstone/Dog’s Bay, or change that route?

Yes definitely! On a fine day, the Sky Road is possibly one of the best short drives in the world. The drive around the coast to Roundstone is superb and there are lots of side roads down to tiny villages to explore . This is a place to slow down and potter. Roundstone with its harbour has possibly one of the best views in Ireland with the Twelve Bens. Also during your research, have you come across the workshops of Bodhran maker, Malachy Kearns on the edge of Roundstone?

Returning to Clifden, rather than heading back along the N59, live 'dangerously' and take the L1105 (The Roundstone Bog Road) which is signed off the R341 about a mile before you reach the N59. This takes you across a once typical peat and bogland landscape with small lakes before the peat was all cut commercially and used in power stations.... It is completely different to the Limestone of the Burren.

Have a wonderful time!

It was a nice and informative reading for me. I would say decision to skip dublin, dingle and killarney prevents tourists bunout and gives room for spontaneous detours.

Looks like a lovely relaxed and enjoyable week! And while I appreciate the enthusiasm for the Ring of Kerry and Dingle, I support the decision to leave them for a future trip.

I was going to mention Corcomroe Abbey and Hazel Mountain Chocolate on Day 3 till I saw them appear on Day 5. But you may find that they are easy to include on Day 3, depending on how your drive is going. And I love it when my timing works for me to eat at Monks in Ballyvaughan when on that drive.

I took wasley’s suggestion of the L1105 (I took a detour drive on my way to Clifden) and the scenery is so interesting. And not to suggest replacing anything on your itinerary! but just added options should you feel like it when the moment arrives, someone here told me about the Cleggan ferry to Inishbofin. I love boats and islands and it was a very pleasant day in good weather (I had one more night in Clifden than you, though).

I have not been to your stops on Day 7. Hmmmmm…… a return? LOL.

Since you're visiting Kylemore Abbey, consider going another eleven miles to the lovely village of Leenane perched at the end of Killary Harbor at the foot of the Maumturk Mountains. The harbor has Ireland's only fjord. In Leenane, take a harbor cruise (https://killaryfjord.ie) and have lunch or dinner at the Purple Door Cafe or Gaynor's/The Field Restaurant.

This looks like a very sensible itinerary, especially your use of Shannon Airport and emphasis on family sites. You don't mention where your O'Briens are from or how recently they came to the US, but you might consider staying the night there if it fits. Maybe you already are. Have a wonderful time and Happy Anniversary!
