We are driving from Dingle to the Cliffs of Moher before stopping in Kinvarra for the night. Can anyone tell me how much time is saved by taking the ferry rather than driving through Limerick? Thanks
Depends on whether or not you wish to visit the Co. Clare countryside on the way. Travelling via Limerick is the direct route and faster, but if you're making a day of it then you're likely to be in the vicinity of the ferry anyway.
The ferry isn't the faster route, but it is the more scenic route especially if you then drive up the coast via Kilrush and Kilkee.
If your goal is to just get there the quickest way then going via Limerick is indeed the preferred route.
Thank you both for your response. I was under the impression it would take less time via the ferry. I assume, though, there will be less time spent driving by taking it. We'll have to ponder this one!
There is also a tunnel under the Shannon, west of Limerick. We used it in 2012 - there is a small toll - a couple of euros. I don't know why this information never shows up on this site!
Can anyone expand about the tunnel mentioned? I am having difficulty exploring this possibility. Thanks again!
Limerick tunnel is part of the N 18 highway. You can see it on Google maps. I think the toll is 2 euros. We have used it twice. The tunnel is just a few miles west of Limerick.
