I always bring a swimsuit with me on vacation just in case. However, I’m going to Ireland in September. Is there any reason I might need a swimsuit?

Only if the hotel has a pool/hot tub, is all that comes to mind.

My wife says that she views her itsy bitsy weeny yellow polka dot bikini as a back-up set of underwear. Takes up no extra room in carry on or just wear it for the flight.

Actually, there are some very nice stretches of sandy beaches in Ireland. Inch beach near Dingle, Kilkee and the beach at Ballinskelligs off the ROK are 3 that spring immediately to mind.
Whether you'll want to brave the cold water and go for a swim is another matter entirely...
