I'm wondering if I need to bring my sunglasses. I need prescription ones so I couldn't just pick up a cheap pair if I decided I needed them.

I guess that would depend a lot on the weather. When I took the RS Ireland tour there were more sunny days that cloudy. Sunglasses would have been handy to have, but I managed without.
I wear sunglasses where ever we go in the day time unless it is raining or heavy overcast. Why not??
Even overcast skies can be bright and hard on your eyes, just like you can get too much exposure to the sun on a seemingly overcast day. Rainy days are different. I would never travel without my (prescription) sunglasses because you never know what the weather will be, no matter where you are going.
Yes, I would absolutely, no matter what your destination.
I don't leave the house without sunglasses AND a hat -- but that's because I am highly sensitive to glare. Neither is heavy or bulky, so why not pack them. (And don't forget a copy of your prescription, just in case!)
The sun does come out in Ireland from time to time, despite adverse publicity.
I wore sunglasses every day we were in Ireland 2 weeks ago.. on and off sort've like my sweater and rain jacket. You need to be ready for all types of weather in Ireland: sun, rain, wind etc.
