Suggestions for Villages or Small Town stays?

Do you have any favorite villages/places to stay that you’ve used as a base for exploring different parts of rural Ireland? We’ll be visiting in May 2027 with our adult kids, 5 of us all together. We enjoy outdoor activities, history, and just getting a sense of culture and place.

Would love to hear about cottages or B&Bs in a small town or village with access to local shops, pub(s) with trad music, and natural areas with hiking/biking trails. Connemara is high on our list but would also like to explore some other areas, perhaps stay 3-5 days in each spot.

Thanks for any suggestions!

Where are you planning to fly into and out of? I assume you are hiring a car? Hoiw long are you planning on spending in Ireland?

That is a very very big brief as there are so many wonderful places to visit in Ireland and there is the danger of getting innundated by too many choices...

Apart from Conneamra, can you begin to identify other areas that attract you?

We are just in the beginning stages of planning so are wide open to suggestions. As you say, there are so many great places, it would be hard to go wrong, so finding some special accommodations could guide the locations we actually choose.

We’re looking at about two weeks time, with some flexibility, and will probably fly into Dublin, for a day or two then take a train towards a smaller place before renting a car, We’re thinking about staying in two to three different places and exploring each area rather than driving point to point each day. We’ve all been to Ireland before, so this trip is more about experiences than checking off specific sites or regions.

I’d like to stay in or within walking distance of a small town or village with access to local paths, natural areas, other interesting views and/or historical features. Being near water is always a plus, so will try to plan at least one coastal stay.
I loved staying near Roundstone on a trip years ago, so may return there or someplace like it. We also enjoyed the Burren and that would be a new area for our kids.

I love opportunities to interact with people and experience a bit of daily life. As far as accommodations go, comfort, friendliness, and charm are most important. We may finish the trip with something a splurge like Ballynahinch or Ashford castle, but for the most part would like to stay in small inns, B&Bs or a local short term rental. Not a huge fan of the big international rental companies.

Would be interested of other people’s experiences and adventures of this type. Thanks!

My recommendation is to use your favorite booking site (I'm an AirBnB user, FWIW), set the filters for your needs and budget, and set the map broadly in your areas of interest. Then make a list of favorites and zoom in on those towns on Google Maps to see what is available there. It's a time-consuming process, but the results can be very rewarding. Just be sure to read the reviews and book directly if possible for B&Bs and small hotels.
All that said:
One town I really enjoyed was Killybegs in Donegal. There are boat tours to see the Slieve League, which you can also drive to and see from above.
