Suggestions for places to stay outside of Dublin

With the high prices of staying in Dublin city center, on this trip my wife and I and our adult son are looking for an interesting community near to Dublin but not in Dublin center. Good public transportation into Dublin is a must, preferably, but not necessarily, by train. We've been to Dublin several times over the years but this year we'd like to trim costs a bit by avoiding the center.

Ideally, this "exurban" location would be interesting in its own right, possibly with some notable history, architecture, physical setting, sights, stories to tell, etc.

Please let me know your suggestions and what you liked about the place(s) you suggest.

We would most likely be travelling this September.

Thanks much,
Mike

There's been some talk about Malahide being nice. Also, close by is Howth. Both of these towns are just north of Dublin. We are staying at Derwent Lodge, says they are 10-15 minutes to Dublin city center.

I’m in Dublin once a year and have been staying south of the Liffey in the Ballsbridge area for many years. I needed a larger place for my visit last month and booked a short term rental property in nearby Sandymount which was perfect - 2 bedrooms, 2 baths, living room/kitchen, washing machine… We were on a direct bus line and a less than 10 minute walk to the DART. It’s a sweet little community with an active park (the Green), grocery store, a lovely strand walk and numerous places to eat.

I have visited Dublin numerous times, perhaps once every other year. I am usually visiting friends and thus stay in Dalkey, south of Dublin. Just below Dun Laoghaire, on the coast. A lovely area, with numerous dining spots, shopping, and delightful walks. Dalkey is a very picturesque village, with enjoyable pubs. And it is an easy DART ride into the city centre.
