suggestions for driving route from Northern Ireland(Armoy) to Doolin

Hi everyone,

Only one day to do this in so we're not planning a lot of extra stops on the way. This is the only part of our trip that we have to push the daily limits in and scoot through without enjoying the local sights. We realize it's a 5-6 hour drive(at least) and were wondering what the quickest route would be and what an alternative scenic(but not longest) route would be so we can make a more informed decision before completely bowing to Google maps' choices.

thanks,
Douglas

The fastest route will be to stick to the motorways ... which is how Google is mapping it out.
The more scenic will be the alternative routing by way of Derry, Donegal and Sligo but that'll take you via the N roads - two lane affairs that can be fraught with delays depending on traffic, cyclists, herds of sheep, etc.
If you just want to get there with a minimum of drama then stick to the motorway.

New Grange and Hill of Tara are both at about the half-way point if you use the motorway route. If you want New Grange, you would need to make reservations. Hill of Tara would be a good picnic site.

Hi Cynthia, we’re seeing Newgrange/HoT at the start of the trip, so that won’t need to factor into it.
Thanks

Hi Robert,
The M’s are my last resort if I can’t decide on a slightly more picturesque route that we can safely do in 8 hours or less with 3-4 short breaks. Not ideal I know, as we managed Inverness-Applecross-Portree ok, but that’s at the upper limits of what we could do. I’d really love to come down the west coast but don’t know in real terms how practical it might be.
We’d love to get into Doolin in time to check in & take a stroll over to Cliffs of Moher in the evening(June).

Well, if that's the case then the longer way around might be preferable at that. There are lots of places to stop along the way, and driving on the N roads isn't particularly arduous if you break it up as you propose to do.
For info, one of the largest concentrations of megalithic tombs in Europe is the area just south of Sligo. Can Google it to see if it might be of interest.
