Stop on drive from Donegal to Dublin - Suggestions?

We will be traveling from Donegal to Dublin Airport 12/26 and I am looking for a stop that's not too off the beaten path (and open or accessible even if visitor center is closed. Ideally to stretch legs and take like an hour break. Likely leaving Donegal around 10:30am and returning car by 3:00pm. We are heading into the city center by cab for a final three days and have tentative plans at 5pm.

Our other option is to attend the St Stephens race meeting for the entire day, but while it looks fun it seems to be a logistic nightmare with luggage/car rental etc....

I've never been to the races in Ireland but have been caught up in race traffic - it was HORRENDOUS!

i've been to many a race meeting (though not leopards town) and have always done them via train. i'm not at all shocked to hear the traffic is a mess. as much as it sounds fun I do think it will be a tough thing to pull off.

that said, I'm back to my original question. where do we stretch our legs between d and d?

Problem is being 26th December, many of the places are going to be closed and a lot depends on the weather....

About half way is Killykeen Forest Park just a few miles west of Cavan, which has waymarked walks - details here. If they are wheelchair accessible they should have a good firm surface and not be too wet and muddy...
