Hi,
We'll be driving from Galway through Co. Roscommon (to visit the ancestral home) back to the Dublin area for the last leg of our Ireland trip in September. We thought of staying overnight in Trim, it looks like a pretty area and is driving distance to Dublin Airport (?). Would welcome recommendations for other stops or an overnight along the way.
Trim is a great place to stop. We were just there last month. We picked up a rental car at Dublin airport and drive to Trim for a night. Easy drive and awesome castle. We stayed at White Lodge B&B. It was very nice.
Kathleen,
I would also recommend Trim. It has some historical interest. The Duke of Wellington, who defeated Napoleon, was reportedly born in Trim. Some scenes from the movie "Braveheart" were filmed in the Trim area. You also would have easy access to the hills of Newgrange and Knowth and the Tara site from Trim.
Athlone is another pleasant town that might serve as an alternative to Trim, but Athlone is a bit farther west.
Thanks both of you for the info. We've booked at Highfield House (White Lodge was full) which seems to be right in town, within walking distance of the castle, restaurants and shops, and also has parking. Looking forward to our stay in Trim!
We stayed at Highfield House last August, and it was lovely. Yes, it is very convenient to everything. We had to leave early in the morning to get to the airport, and our host was very gracious to make sure that we were able to get breakfast.
