Staying in Countryside

This is our first trip to Ireland (have made several to Germany & Switzerland) and will be staying in the countryside near Lough Gamhna in County Longford. I am curious about travel back into Dublin and also Galway or other places on day trips and where to park and how to best get about the towns.

How are you getting to your accommodation in the first place?

Yes, I should have been a bit clearer. We are renting cars (there are 7 of us in total) at the airport and driving to the B&B. So, we will be driving back into Dublin and other sites for day visits. I would rather drive in and find a nice car park and then venture out from there either by walking or taking local transport (bus or taxi). Ideally, we should have arranged for accomodations in the city for the first 2-3 nights, but the arrangements were made by our son and his family as a Christmas gift. Personally, I'm more interested in Trinity College than I am in Guinness tour or Temple Bar. I would much rather go to some pub a few blocks away from Temple Bar or even better to one in the villages near our B&B. Cliffs of Moher are appealing, as are the Aran Islands. Seeing a local football and/or hurling match are also more my speed. Blarney Castle is not on my list. I would rather go to a lesser known castle. Ancient Celtic sites are of interest. When we've been in Germany we have mostly gone to the less well known places, such as Kaiserlautern, Erfurt, Eisenach, Schmalkalden, Leipzig, Bamberg, Nurnberg, Suhl, Wurtburg, etc. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
