I will be staying in the area of Cork for 3 nights. Just wondering which of these cities would be the most scenic and or relaxing. We have a car and will be exploring the area and not just staying in town for all 3 days. Thx
Kindle? Did you mean Kinsale?
Yes. Thank you. That’s what I get for typing without my glasses. Lol. I’ll edit that
Personally I loved Kinsale. Others think it's too touristy, but I found it delightful, especially in the morning and evening. We also stayed in Cork and I liked that too, but it's a much bigger city. I'm not into nightlife but I would suppose Cork has more going on as far as entertainment than Kinsale. We visited Cobh as a day trip from Cork. Cobh was fascinating, I loved the Cobh Heritage Center. We didn't go to the Titanic experience but it might be interesting. I remember some graves of the Titanic dead in a cemetery in Kinsale. A great area of Ireland to explore.
We have stayed in Kinsale several times and prefer it over Cobh which to us has more of a city feel to it. We did enjoy Cobh as day trip from Kinsale. Took the car ferry there and back one time. Very easy. The view from St. Colman s is not to be missed. At the waterfront be sure to see the statue of Annie Moore and her little brothers. She was the first immigrant to enter Ellis Island.
I agree with the others - Kinsale is the choice. Though it can get pretty congested around midday with day trippers things mellow out in a hurry once they leave around 4 PM.
On a sunny day there's a coastline walk down to Charles Fort which is quite nice. The route passes thru the village of Summercove where you'll pass the Bulman Pub - one of the most atmospheric in Ireland. Can stop there for a pint and/or some pub grub on the way back into town on the return trip. If you stop in on the way down you'll never make it to the fort.
Loving all the input. Thank you. Especially stopping into the pub on the way back from the fort. Good call.
We stayed in Kinsale for 4 nights last August and loved it. There is a lot to see in the area and it was easy to drive in and out of town. For a nice meal I recommend Fishy Fishy. We went there our last night and I wish we had discovered it sooner.
I also loved Kinsale. It’s a quaint, colourful small town with great food. I recall sitting in a small restaurant on the docks and having fish and chips, but the fish was several different kinds ( salmon, cod, halibut and others). Best fish and chips I ever had. As someone else mentioned, you can walk out to Charles Fort then do the guided tour and hear about the white lady. You can also walk a path on the other side of the harbour and get to the ruins of James Fort, I took a picnic lunch and sat and watched the goings on in the harbour which was apparently a beginner class of sailors because a couple of people tipped themselves into the water.
Anita - that sounds like a terrific day. Ty
We are big fans of Kinsale. Beautiful and quaint. We also followed Rick's walking tour from the Ireland guidebook which is another great thing to do in the area and very scenic. We took a Harbor Tour out of Kinsale which was nice and visited the fort. There was also a "ghost" tour we did one evening, which was more of a comedy tour and it was fun. Lots of great eats in Kinsale!
