Staying in Cork City proper

When we travel throughout Ireland we've always stayed at a B&B (or with relatives) and have had no difficulty finding an interesting place to book. This trip we'd like to stay in Cork (not the outskirts, not Kinsale, etc.) -- the actual city. Of course, the typical Ireland B&B isn't something we'd expect to find there. So I've been looking through VRBO and AirBnB listings. So far, we're not excited about what we're finding. (Why aren't all those Apple folks working in Cork renting out their places? )

If anyone has suggestions for a better way to find something we'd love it hear it. We're almost at the point of checking the hotels. (That's what we used to do for a few nights in Dublin ... something we will no longer be able to do as we just spotted that our fav. Jurys Custom House in Dublin sold out to become a Hilton Garden Inn, at double the price. Nothing good lasts forever.)

Anyway, back to Cork. It's the last of our 2 challenges for this trip. Thanks.

Have you tried searching through the tourist office? It looks like "guesthouse" may be a more successful search term in the city than B&B.

Thanks, Laura. I ended up searching through Trip Advisor listings under B&B (which was quite the exhausting search -- your suggestion would have been better, I suspect). BTW, I would probably never stay anywhere if I focused on the 1-star reviews, which I always read to balance out the glowing 5-star blurbs (and then puzzle out who's writing what).

It turns out that having parking -- dedicated parking, not just an open space (maybe) on the street -- was quite key. And that's not easy to come by for anything that also places us in walking distance to the city center. We think we've found a place, with fingers crossed, after studying the reviews and photos. At the least it will be an 'adventure'.

I visited Cork this past November and stayed at Garnish House, not far from the university. I think it was about 12 minutes walk to town center, and about 20 minutes taxi to airport. They also have a small parking lot if you are driving. Breakfast was amazing - you pay extra for it (I think it was €10) but it was WORTH IT. My room wasn't fancy but it was comfortable. The staff was great too.
