I'm firming up my itinerary (many thanks to those of you who gave me some great things to think about). We will have a rental car and going to Inishmore from the Galway bay side. I'm thinking we will probably just do the minivan tour on the island and then wander the port city for awhile. I initially thought staying on the island might be fun, but with my 13 yr old, I'm rethinking that and maybe we just go for the day and stay in Galway. Would anyone strongly recommend staying on the island?
Mullgirl,
I stayed on Inishmore twice. I loved it and strongly recommend it, provided you have the time and inclination. The atmosphere was incredible: the surf, the feel of the ocean, the quiet and the stars.
I've taken a minivan tour, but also the horse-and-buggy tour and rented a bicycle. My favorite was the bicycle rental. Another good idea is to do the minivan and bicycle rental both. The minivan will teach you something about the culture. The bicycle allows you to see the island at your own pace.
In Kilronan, there once was a museum about the Aran Islands. I tried to find a link for it to include here, but cannot find it. If the museum is still there, it's worth seeing.
Make sure you see Dun Aengus, the prehistoric fort overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. Such views!
Cheers.
Any recommendations for places to stay? If you had a rental car, where did you leave it? Is there parking at the ferry? Thanks.
Aran Island Ferries offers a shuttle service from Galway City.
Am pretty sure there's overnight parking at the terminal, but suggest you contact them directly:
