I will be in Northern Ireland over St. Patrick's day. Any recommendations for the best celebration? Belfast or a smaller town? I'm not looking for anything rowdy....just the most authentic experience.
Put the title of your post onto google. The exact info you need will come up. Looks like fun.
I was in Belfast for St. Patrick's Day in 2015. As an outsider, all I can say is that it won't be what you expect. There was a parade in the centre of town, and people celebrating and Irish flags waving - and in front of City Hall there was a group of people with British flags singing football songs (I had to ask what the songs were) to the celebrants (and vice versa) - look up the lyrics to "Billy Boys" for example. Separating the groups was a long line of policemen. It got tense and the police moved the groups apart. As a British flag was being burned I left.
I'd try Derry/Londonderry, or hop a train across the border...it's a short trip.
Head to Downpatrick, burial place of the man himself.
We were in the Republic of Ireland, heavily Roman Catholic, on St. Patrick’s Day. Small town parades, church services, locals gathering at Pubs, live shamrocks pinned on coats.
