Spring-break trip - public trans - fly in and out of Dublin

My daughter, my Dad and I will be traveling to Ireland for Spring Break - we roughly have Sunday to Thursday (flying into Dublin Sat. and out from Dublin Friday). We don't want to rent a car. This is our first and probably only trip to Ireland. Dad is in his 70s but gets around well. It's time to make lodging arrangements. My question is, should we just stay in Dublin the entire time and take one-day bus tours from there, or should we travel by bus to another city after a day or two in Dublin, so we are closer to some of the popular sites (and then somehow get back to Dublin to fly out on Friday).

What is it that you family wishes to see? Castles? Newgrange? Giant's Causeway? Museums? Cemeteries? Churches? Ruins? If you are not going to rent a car (the best way to see Ireland) then base in Dublin and take tours to Newgrange, Glendalough, Rock of Cashel. Public transport in Ireland is not the best means of transport, know that up front. You should also consider an overnight in Belfast. Take the train or bus ( two hour ride), visit the Titanic Museum, take the black cab tour of Shankill Road. Next day visit the Giant's Causeway which would be mean a tour from Belfast, then train or bus back to Dublin. Premiere Inn at the Titanic Quarter has good rates for Belfast. If you do go the seafood chowder at Mourne's by Kelly's Tavern is the best chowder EVER.
