With an 8 AM arrival and a 3PM apartment checkin time, I am considering spending most of the day at the Guinness Storehouse,
say from 10 AM to 2PM. They offer luggage storage and looks like there is a cafe and several restaurants to hang out in before/after taking a tour. I also have read that the city view from the 7th story bar is a great way to get a bit familiar with the city. Dores this seem like a reasonable idea?
It sounds reasonable but wouldn't be my personal choice. I enjoyed visiting the Guiness Storehouse and found the museum part much more interesting than I had expected. Hanging out a while enjoying the free glass of beer and the view is nice. However, for myself, if arriving with jet lag and lack of sleep, indoor activities, waiting in lines, a museum, and beer would not work well to keep me awake and moving :). My arrival day activity preference is usually a self guided walking tour where I am outdoors, moving, but can stop and rest or have coffee as needed.
Where are you coming from? Far enough away to be jet lagged? We only managed a couple of hours on our last day before we had to leave. The Storehouse tour was loud, crowded (hard to find seats in the bars/restaurants) , and full of lights and unusual displays. Jet lagged, I think it would be more than I could handle. Just my opinion, and I'm not a huge Guinness fan.
{edit}Repetitive, but I'll leave this up.
Depending on the time of year that you are going, I think you have to book a time slot for Guinness. I wouldn't book anything on arrival day, in case of delayed flights. I certainly wouldn't book a 10am time slot after an 8am arrival. The best way to get familiar with the city is to walk around. The sights that are of interest to tourists are in a very compact area. There is luggage storage service in the Arts Building at Trinity College.
In August 2023 our family group of 9 did this upon arrival in Dublin and loved it. (We did drop bags at the hotel first though). Visiting the Guinness Storehouse was a priority and our visit proved to be a fun intro to Dublin. Yes it is crowded and touristy but worked very well for our crew aged 18-80. Top level bar was great.
I think it's a great idea and I would do it. I think there are so much happening throughout the museum that, even with jet lag, you'll be able to enjoy it. Sláinte!
Thanks for the comments. I'm leaning to doing this as we don't usually suffer too greatly from jet lag so being in a noisy, busy environment doesn't really worry me. The alternative is to find luggage storage near our apartment and then roam around, find restaurants and places to sit or stay for several hours, then go back for luggage and trek to checkin. Could be fine unless the weather is not good.
