My wife and I both have iPhones and our carrier is Spectrum Mobile. Spectrum has an international plan that has $0.07 per minute calling, free texting, and $0.01 per mb data. We will be in Ireland and N. Ireland for 18 days. We will be using the iPhones for occasional calls and map usage. I am trying to decide if I want to just use the Spectrum plan or something else.
That's not terrible pricing - $10 per GB of data. Buying a SIM might be a little cheaper but probably isn't going to save you a lot of money (more if you were there a month vs. 18 days) and you won't have your own US phone number to use with a SIM card.
Sign up for Google Voice before you go so you can make free calls to the US (while on WiFi - if not you are using that mobile data) - handy in case you need to call your airline and get put on hold for an hour or something. Also, WhatsApp is popular in Europe - if you sign up for that, you can call hotels and such through WhatsApp (again, use WiFi if you can) for free.
Thank you for the advice. That is what I thought but I am grateful for the confirmation. I will check out Google Voice.
