Smart phone navigating apps for Ireland

I'm going to Ireland next week and am concerned about a GPS app I can download (and maps) then use without data in Ireland. I'm interested in anyone's favorites.

My last four trips (to France) I've been using a co pilot app. It has worked fine but, when I downloaded fresh Irish maps a couple weeks ago, it said the app was no longer going to be supported. I use an American version at home (not as good as the Europe version) and it stopped working in the last week or so. Now I'm thinking I better have a back up app downloaded in case my Europe co pilot also decides to stop working.

I've used Google maps but don't like it much. It's a battery and data hog. It can navigate without data but, if you miss a turn, it won't recalculate without turning data on.

Any suggestions?

Download a custom map of Ireland or the portion of Ireland from Google maps for offline use. Once in country, place your phone in airplane mode and it will be a GPS. No data usage needed. Sorry you don’t like it, but it worked well for me in other countries. I just plugged it into the USB to save battery life.

Thanks,

That's one choice I've been considering - offline Google maps. I think the thing that makes me most leery is experiencing the rate the app went through my battery compared to other navigation apps. At least maps offline would stop the data drain. I always end up with too much data but early in the trip you don't know that and you don't want to waste it when you shouldn't have to.

Offline Google maps work pretty well, with a few caveats from my experience:

  1. Don’t forget to download the map(s) you want to use before you leave home, while you’re on WiFi. (I think you can fit all of Ireland onto 2 or 3 maps.)

  2. As someone else said, if you’re using it in the car, be sure to plug the phone into the charger, because you’re right—it does drain the phone battery quickly.

  3. It gives good directions while driving, but does NOT have voice prompts, so you need a copilot in the front seat to watch the road signs and announce upcoming turns.

  4. It sometimes give directions that are TOO good. Meaning, usually it opts for the most “direct” route, which is sometimes a farm track over a bumpy road, when you could have stayed on the main county road for an extra 1/10 of a mile with a lot less trouble. Not that it’s ever happened to me. ;) So if you can preview your route before heading off, and even compare it to a printed map, that might help.

  5. It doesn’t give you a route if you’re walking somewhere. I have no idea why.

Oh, and if it doesn’t recalculate after a missed turn, you can always pull over somewhere safe, turn off the navigation, and turn it back on, and it should create a new route for you from your new location. I think??

There are other offline mapping apps besides Google Maps, too, but I haven’t used them, so can’t comment. Another alternative is to bring a standalone GPS unit from home, preloaded with Ireland maps. It’s clunky, but if you have a unit you’re familiar with, that can reduce a lot of stress.

Have a wonderful trip!

I downloaded Sygic. They have a deal with TomTom so it looks and sounds more like a regular GPS.

I downloaded a different one on a second smart phone and navigated from DC to West Virginia with the two phones side by side. Generally they were identical. Sygic seemed preferable, the other wanted me to take some exits that didn't seem like as good of an idea.

With that, I have three options on my phone now. Co Pilot, Sygic and Google maps.
