My wife and I are traveling to Ireland in 2020 during the week of St Patrick's Day. My birthday is 3/17 and I will be 65. It has long been my dream to be sitting in a small, quaint pub mingling with the locals as an Irish band played in the background on my birthday Would anyone have suggestions? I'm thinking of starting our Ireland visit in Dublin to be at the Guinness celebration a day or two prior to St Patrick's day, then off to find that little pub I mentioned above.
Thanks,
Oh Danny boy
We spent St. Patrick’s Day in Dublin about 15 years ago. It was as close to Mardi Gras as I ever want to get! Be prepared for a big crowds in the city center. There are no shortages of quaint pubs, and I’m sure you’ll get some great suggestions. It just might be a different scene than you’re expecting on that particular day. You might have a better chance of mingling with locals if you get outside the city a little.
Get out of Dublin which will be an absolute madhouse!!!
Get miles away from Dublin. Somewhere less touristy.
You could try John Longs in Carlingford but I suspect it might be crowded and rowdy as well. Still it’s a nice local pub in a town an hour and a half away from Dublin. Mourneview B AND B outside Carlingford is fantastic.
Or maybe stay in Bray and see what’s happening at the Harbour Bar.

Be aware that all pubs everywhere will be packed and likely to be fairly boisterous so don't expect too much of a relaxing experience. Definitely head away from Dublin.
Thanks for your insight!
Where else are you going to be in Ireland. I've also heard that you either embrace the festivities in Dublin or avoid the city completely around then. Check what's going on that weekend, it may be crazy for several days, not just the 15th.
