If you had to choose between Sligo and Westport for 2 nights, which would you choose and why?
Love hearing all your thoughts on places. So much knowledge here. You are all so incredible.

On our trip last September, with a rental car, we had 2 nights in a B&B just a bit northwest of Sligo itself. It was a good base for scenic drives to the north and a bit of a scrambling hike. We made a brief stop in Sligo town, but we were heading for the countryside.
We actually drove right past Westport, and so missed it completely, but were headed for our nights on Achill Island, coming from the south. If you were in Westport, it would afford access to places along the coast to the south and west, including the fabulous Killary Fjord boat tour outside of Leenaun.
Do not suggest Wyatt Hotel in Westport. Little sleep due to noise and it as the hotel staff making the noise.....
Great info.....thank you all for taking the time to answer my endless questions. I really appreciate it.
We just spent a week in Westport. I would happily go back for another week. It's easy to walk to everything in town. There is a well stocked supermarket, several spas and lots of little shops. The restaurant choices are varied and each one is just as delicious as the last (Sage and Cians on the Bridge were our two favorites). We usually enjoyed a late afternoon pint sitting outside the Cobblers Bar and watching the traffic and people go by. If you are a runner there is a very nice bike/running path that goes from town to the quay. It's a little over a 3 mile round trip and no car traffic to worry about. A drive out to Achill Island is a great day trip from Westport. And if you have the time and inclination biking the Great Western Way is a must do. Bike Hire places will take you out to Achill Island and you bike back to Westport. The entire trip took us 4 hours and that was with a long lunch stop in Newport. If you are there on a Thursday visit the Country Market. We purchased a selection of cheeses, breads, and sweets from the various vendors and enjoyed a picnic dinner in front of our turf fire in our vacation house rental. A visit to Westport House is fun and very interesting. Download the audio guide and bring headphones so you can do the tour properly. We also took the ferry out to Clare Island and did the purple loop trail. This was one of our best hikes Maybe because we felt like it was just us plus many sheep and cows on the trail.
We spent another week in Sligo country and drove thru Sligo a few times. I look forward to getting a chance to stop and visit. It seemed bigger and less compact than Westport which is neither a plus or minus for us just an observation. We love both County Mayo and Sligo and honestly depending on your day trip location I don't think you could go wrong with either location. Check the calendars for both places before you book there maybe events happening that might interest you.
If you do decide on Sligo I would recommend a trip to Voya Seaweeds baths in Strandhill. Heaven on earth doesn't even begin to describe the experience. Book a bath and a body scrub.
The Grand Grand Tour.....thanks.....great info
