SIM Card Shannon Airport

We will be a party of three and will each want to get SIM cards for our phone, primarily to get Internet access and possibly to make a phone call if necessary (probably will not be). Can one get a SIM card at the airport in Shannon? Is it just a matter of inserting the SIM into the phone or is there anything else that needs to be done to get things working? I'm not very knowledgeable about these things.

Thanks -

george

First you need to find out from your current carrier if your phone is "unlocked" -- that is, will it operate with another carrier, or is it locked only to the carrier through whom you bought it.

you might want to look at giffgaff.com. That's what I plan to do. I believe sim cards at the airports can be expensive, like the money exchange, the food, and the books.

I will look into them, but I am more interested in assurity that things will work and convenience than saving a few dollars. From what I have read, there is a Vodaphone store in a mall in Shannon where someone will put the card into the phone and make sure that everything works properly. That is worth paying extra for than get something that may not work (perhaps because I do not know to do something), then I have a lot of stress trying to get something essential going so that I can start my vacation. If this service is available in the airport in Shannon then I am fine paying for it.

When this question came up a few years ago, there didn’t seem to be any stores that sold SIM cards at the Shannon airport. The WH Smith store sells them at the Dublin Airport, so it’s possible that the Shannon WH Smith store has them, but it’s not mentioned on the airport website.

There are Vodaphone stores at the Skye Court Shopping Center in Shannon and in Ennis, which also has a Tesco. There is a Tesco in Coonagh Cross if you’re driving in the direction of Limerick.

The stores typically open at 9 a.m. so it depends on when your flight arrives and what direction you’re driving.

You can buy and install a SIM card on your own, but I typically just buy one at a phone store and let them do it.

All the best,

Raymond
