We will be in southern Ireland the first ten days of June. I understand that we should plan to dress in layers but I am wondering if we should pack any capris or shorts. We have good rain coats but I am considering waterproof shoes. Neither my hiking shoes or ASICS are waterproof. Any thoughts??
I was in Ireland in late June 2011. Ireland is beautiful but all day long the weather can change. If it was me, I would not bring capris or shorts. I would if you have room bring one pair of capris if you really want to. I brought jeans and khakis. Nothing dressy and one pairs of shoes and a pair of sneakers. My sneakers got wet so I let them dry out and had another pair of shoes with me. Does the rain coat have a hood? That will help. Yes, layering is important. And just because it is southern Ireland does not mean it will get warmer. It is not like Italy where the weather will be very warm. You may hit upon warm days but it is an island and there is wind and rain and sun and water. It can be cool. Have a great time.
No and yes.
No capris and no shorts.
At least one pair of waterproof shoes
^^^ What they said.
I agree with Ann. Maybe 1 pr capris IF the weather right before you go is very warm.
No to waterproof shoes, but agree with 2 pr so one can dry if they get wet. First, if you don't have them now it's too late to get some good walking in them to make sure they are comfortable. Second unless you are going to do lots of hiking your feet may stay fairly dry even if it is quite rainy.
I was in Ireland in 2014 and it was unseasonably hot, but I do understand it's not always that way. Shorts would not have been needed but capris would have been great.
We were there at the end of July/beginning of August last year and no shorts or capris were needed. Do not bother bringing them.
I also would not bother with water proof shows but would bring 2 pairs of comfortable ones. I alternated between my Toms and my skechers go walk and they were perfect!
Bring layers (t-shirts, cardigans/sweatshirt) light waterproof jacket. I loved having my baseball cap as well both for when it rained and when it was crazy windy!
When we were in Ireland we always carried a pair of dry socks in each of our day bags. Saved the day on a couple of occasions even though we had "water proof" shoes.
I was in Ireland in July 2015 (4 ladies age 45-60). We had two hot days (75 + degrees) and then it went down hill fast after that. Even on the "hot days" we did not wear capris and definitely do not bring shorts. We wore hiking style pants and jeans. We hiked a lot so waterproof tennis shoes were a must for us; however, you could just bring two pairs of shoes and dry a pair out if needed. The temperature was mostly in the 60's for the rest of the week and it rained a lot. We even wore gloves and ear warmers at times. Don't under estimate the wind and rain along the west coast. It can be quite frigid at times even in the middle of summer. I know it is very hard to pack when you are wearing your spring/summer season clothing at home - but be prepared to layer in Ireland. I am heading to Ireland myself in two weeks time.
Thank you to all who replied. I will not be taking any capris or shorts. I do have a pair of zip off pants that I am taking.
