Should we buy a leap card for our family of 4 in Dublin?

Hello!
Family of 4 (my husband and I and our 2 teens ages 15 & 17) will be in Dublin for 2 1/2 days in August. We’ll be staying at the Kilronan House on Adelaide St. Do we need a public transportation card (like the Leap card) to get around the city? We will need to get back and forth to the Airport twice (once when we get there and then to go back to pick up our rental car for the rest of our trip around the country).

We don’t mind walking, but would like the option of a bus or the LUAS if possible.

Should we end up buying the Leap card, can we buy it online and have it mailed to us in the States?

Any advice would be helpful!

Thanks in advance,
Suzanne

Suzanne - We stayed in the Rialto neighborhood of Dublin for several days, and although we enjoy walking, we used the LeapCard for getting around on the LUAS. We picked it up at the train station when we arrived in Dublin and preloaded it. Easy to use - tap on, tap off. And honestly we met some interesting people and had great conversations taking the LUAS.
For more info on it go to www.leapcard.ie

I am not familiar with that card, but we stayed outside the city center and took the dart train from our B&B and the airlink bus from the airport. We found Dublin to be a very walkable city.....for instance we walked from the Kilmainham Gaol to the Guiness Brewery, not too far at all.

My husband and I will be staying in Dun Laoghire for 5 nights at one of Rick's recommended B&Bs, and I'm thinking of buying a LEAP card before we go, as we will use the DART line to get into the city. They have tourist cards for unlimited travel that includes the LUAS and buses. There is a 3-day version that sounds ideal for your situation. Even if you lose money versus buying one there, the convenience seems worth it when you are a clueless tourist. Mind, I've never been to Dublin myself so this may be the blind leading the blind. :-) http://www.irishrail.ie/index.jsp?p=118&n=305&a=587

We liked the airlink for trips from airport into Dublin and then back to the airport to pick up our rental car. If you go that route don't do what we did and wait in line at the terminal. Just hop on the bus (website online will allow you to figure if you need the 747 or 757) and buy tix there.
